In this most eloquent piece, Ashley Judd addresses the media flurry caused by her “puffy” appearance last month.
The gossipers lynched her for being on steroids, having plastic surgery, getting older or gaining weight, sometimes a variation of two or more of these. “We won’t even address how extraordinary it is that a size eight would be heckled as ‘fat,'” she says.
She rightfully calls out picking apart women’s bodies for its inherent misogyny. Ironically, she points out, women are largely the ones doing the picking apart. And if you think it’s hogwash, consider that Liz Raftery wrote about it for People, Debbie Emery represented for Radar Online, perennial favourite Ariana Finlayson was on top of it for Us Magazine, and Cara Harrington covered it for Hollywood Dame.
Judd asks, “Why was a puffy face cause for such a conversation in the first place? How, and why, did people participate?” I wonder how the media would respond. I bet they simply won’t. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t.

In the next Cosmopolitan issue, cover girl Khloe Kardashian dishes on her mother’s inconsistent expectations regarding her weight.
During an episode of Khloe & Lamar, Kris chided Khloe for not keeping her weight in check. In response, Khloe told her mother to fuck right off in a more elegant way than usual.
“To tell me I’m ruining a whole brand because of my weight gain makes me feel like shit,” she said. “Get over yourself. You’re such a fucking raging lunatic and you’re so evil. I’m too fucking fat, too fucking fat. Do you want me to get pregnant? Do you want me to lose weight? You tell me you want me to have a baby every second, but I can’t be on some crazy diet. I just don’t get what you want out of me!”
Sadly, Kris’s behaviour is as erratic as the media’s.

Mischa is another poor celeb the gossipers won’t leave alone. She’s either too fat or too skinny. She’s never just fine.
In this photo, she looks alright, but The Hollywood Gossip won’t let it be. They suggest that while she’s not as thin as before, it must be because she’s eating unhealthy food instead of, y’know, eating at all.

Jennifer Garner is “applauded” for not having immediately regained her pre-baby svelteness after giving birth to her third child one month ago. A move that’s equated with focusing on motherhood.
Because you don’t love your children unless you’re fat.
No nanny. No personal trainer. No PA. What's Jennifer Garner playing at?
Besides the unflattering photos, the fact that this seemed to warrant any attention feels like a subtle condemnation.

There was as much ado about Beyoncé giving birth as there was around her post-baby body. Something they hardly ever tell you is how youth can help you lose the baby fat a little quicker, not to mention how many babies you’ve had. At age 30, this is Beyoncé’s first child. Then again, she was probably working out during her whole pregnancy, and likely crash-dieted for a good week before painting this blue number on.

At least she was curvy pre-pregnancy.
